The 2027 European Skyrunning Championships will be hosted at a new skyrunning venue in Azpeitia, in the Basque Country, Spain on May 6-8, 2027, at the Domusa Teknik 40MLK events.

The 13th edition of the biennial European Championships will see teams from across Europe battle for the twenty-seven medals and European titles at stake. The events will feature the VERTICAL, SKY and SKYULTRA skyrunning disciplines.

The Domusa Teknik 40MLK will celebrate their sixth edition with the Championships. It has established itself as one of the leading events on the national mountain running calendar demonstrating their ability to deliver top-level competition and meet the demanding technical and organisational standards required for an official championship.

The events kick off on Thursday, May 6th with the VERTICAL, the Domusa Teknik KB – starting in Azpeitia, it is 3.5 km long with 800m vertical climb – short and steep with stretches of 47% incline.

Friday, May 7th details of the day’s events will be notified at a later date.

On Saturday, May 8, both the SKY and SKYULTRA will be held with the same start and finish in Azpeitia.

The Domusa Teknik 15MLK represents the SKY discipline – 26 km long with 1,650m vertical climb reaching 1,011m altitude. The varied course combines technical sections with more runnable terrain.

The SKYULTRA will be held at the Domusa Teknik 40MLK – 65 km long with a demanding 4,000m vertical climb summiting at 1,038m altitude. The course crosses several villages and mountain terrain where the often rainy conditions add an extra challenge with mud – no doubt a bonus to athletes from northern countries who are used to it. It is an ISF Technical level 1+.

Details will be advised regarding the parade and presentation of participating teams, the welcoming ceremony, race briefings, bib and equipment distribution together with the medal awards ceremonies, and a grand final Championship celebration, with music, performances, and cultural activities.

More than 400 volunteers are involved every year, and their contribution is one of the event’s fundamental pillars. Their work ensures the smooth running of the competition, participant safety, support for the public and the operation of the event’s entire infrastructure, while also reflecting the local community’s strong commitment to the race.

The organisers are fully dedicated to protecting the environment and supporting local sourcing. Inclusion and equality are underlined to encourage women’s participation and promote a balanced representation. For example, the Domusa Teknik 15MLK reserves 50% of the race entries for women.

The location in Azpeitia is strategically located in the heart of Gipuzkoa with connections to no less than four airports nearby: San Sebastián, 40 minutes, and one hour from Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Biarritz. It is 1 hour 15 minutes from Pamplona.

Azpeitia boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage. The Urola Valley brings together mountains, nature, culture, gastronomy and a strong Basque identity. The nearby spectacular coastline on the Atlantic Ocean is another reason to extend a post-race stay, making for an all-round appreciation of the area outside of the competitions.

“Hosting the 2027 Skyrunning European Championships in Azpeitia is a source of immense pride for our entire region. We want athletes and spectators alike to experience a true celebration of skyrunning,” commented Iñaki Rodríguez, Member of the Domusa Teknik 40MLK Organising Committee.

“We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our volunteers, sponsors and local institutions, who are the heart and soul of this event and make all of this possible. The Basque Country has a deep passion for mountain running and we are confident that this will be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
