Friday’s KM Vertical, third in the five-race Series, delivered a surprise package at the finish line, with Columbian Saul Antonio Padua in first place ahead of favourites Kilian Jornet, world champion record holder Urban Zemmer and ranking leader Marco Facchinelli.

Padua sliced two minutes off Jornet’s 2012 time, closing with a new course record in 34’34”, Kilian a very close second in 34’53, and Norwegian Erik-Dagssøn Haugsnes in 35’02”.  The top six men closed under Jornet’s winning time last year of 36’07”.

World record holder Christel Dewalle from France took a comfortable win in 41’33” followed by Spanish world champion Laura Orgué, 42’53” and Confortola third in 42’55”.  World champion Emelie Forsberg was fourth.

Two top stars took part in the race – Anna Frost, after a long period of injury, in her first SWS race of the season was 12th.  She will be competing in Sunday’s marathon. Briton Andy Symonds who had to renounce the season’s big races due to injury, accompanied his sister up the lung-busting vertical kilometre.

Now leading the Vertical Series are La Sportiva’s Marco Facchinelli and Urban Zemmer, second, followed by Andorra’s Ferran Teixidò.  The women’s ranking is headed by Salomon’s Laura Orgué in top place, Tessa Hill, Arc’teryx, second and Alba Xandri, FEEC, third.

The Skyrunner® World Series resumes in Chamonix with Sunday’s Mont-Blanc Marathon, the second event in the Sky Series, where no less than six world champions will compete.
