Zegama - SWS opener

Zegama-Aizkorri – a race as demanding as its pronunciation. This immensely successful race will see the world’s top skyrunners compete in Spain’s Basque Country on May 20.

The star-studded line-up looks set to deliver plenty of action and perhaps a shot at the standing records:  3h54’18“ by Rob Jebb (2005) and  4h38’19“ by Emanuela Brizio (2009).

Last year’s winners, Kilian Jornet and local runner Oihana Kortazar (reigning world champion) will try for a repeat performance, but look out for Briton Tom Owens, hot on Jornet’s heels last year.  Top international runner Anna Frost from New Zealand will try her hand at this event for the first time as well as new entries from USA, Russia, Germany, Greece and Sweden.

The great success of this race is thanks to a number of key factors: the passion of the organisers; the gruelling course with more than 5,400 metres of ascent and descent; and the massive participation of both athletes and spectators.

The athletes are capped at 500 but there’s always room for the thousands of spectators lining the course cheering on every single runner.

As usual there was an overwhelming 2,000 entry requests.  The final entrants, apart from the élite runners, are decided by a draw on January 27.

Race winners receive €1,200 each and €2,500 are awarded for a new record (€1,250 if there are two).

Top runners will be announced soon.
